I finished a few things this week. First, I finished making the base of my World Culture Pot. The shape isn't quite how I planned it to be, but I think it looks good enough. It's a bit bigger than I expected. I am going to wait till next class, when it will be leather hard, to start piercing it. I also finished my coil pot! When the glaze came out of the kiln I was a bit surprised by the color of the roof. It was a strange light brown/beige mixture which I wasn't that fond of. I decided to paint over it with some golden acrylic paint, and I think it came out quite nice! It looks even more like a magical fairytale tower now. I probably should have taken a 'before' picture of the roof, but I got so carried away with the acrylic paint that I forgot. Next week I will focus on finishing up my world culture pot by piercing it, and getting my coil pot ready to put on display.
World culture project!! I chose the Oaxacan Mexican pottery. I think they look sooo cool. I'm a little scared by all the piercing but it looks really awesome YAYYY. I have all my research in my sketchbook, so I guess I'll just talk about my plans for the pot I'm going to build. I am going to build the pot out of coils, but smooth the coils out. The shape has to be rotund and spherical. When it gets a bit leather hard, I'm going to pierce out designs!! I want to make simple flowers like in the pictures below. It looks like it will be difficult, but I'm super excited!! I finished my pot!! I'm feeling quite accomplished and actually kind of proud of myself right now. My pot's not perfect, but I'm still happy with the look. I made a few changes from my original design. The roof shape is different, since it originally supposed to be a long cone. I tried multiple roof shapes but they all looked a little funky so I just decided to make a standard pyramid-triangle roof. I used the flat end of a wooden modeling tool to impress little tile textures on the roof. The window border is also different. I originally planned to add swirly coils around it and make an iron work looking design, but it looked a bit messy, and there wasn't a lot of room above the window to add a big design. I just stuck with a very basic border around the window, which I think looks fine still. Overall, I'm pleased with my pot and looking forward to see what happens after the bisque-fire!
I finished my coil pot today!! Well, almost. I finished the main base and it is just a little under 30 cm right now. I still have to make the roof though, so it's okay if the pot shrinks because the roof will put it well over 30 cm. I'm planning on piercing a small window, probably near the top of the pot. I couldn't do it today obviously because the clay was too plastic, but I think it'll be perfect after I return from thanksgiving weekend. I'm just happy that I finished coiling and it looks okay! It's pretty sturdy too, so I don't have to worry too much about it collapsing or anything. Can't wait to add more details to it next week! I'm thinking about wrapping little vine coils on it as well. I'll test it out and see how it looks. This is it for now though! Update you next week, Bethany
Hello! Above you can see a picture of my pot on tuesday's class, and below, the most recent picture. I think my pot's really coming along so I am quite pleased. It is about 17-18 cm now, so I'm almost halfway there! As you can tell from the picture, I tried to make it a bit more interesting by making it coil in a bit, and now I am working on coiling out again. This is just to give it more shape, so it doesn't look like a plain old cylinder. I tried to smooth it out some more, and make it less lumpy by patting it down with a flat board. I'm having a lot of fun building my pot and can't wait till it's done!
