This past coil pot unit has been a wonderful experience for me and I feel like I’ve definitely grown as an artist in multiple ways. To begin with, this is my very first time working on a single large piece for several weeks. During the pinch pot unit, I made an assortment of small pots, but this was the first time I could focus on creating just one piece. I’ve never been this attached to anything I made before. Normally I don’t feel the need to keep or display my art afterwards, but with this pot, I feel a certain connection and pride because I literally built it all by myself from scratch. Besides developing a sense of artistic ownership, I also grew as an artist in skill. I created the base of my pot entirely using the coil technique, which I had never tried before. This unit was also my first time using stoneware clay and dip-glazing. By attempting these new skills I was able to expand my abilities as an artist.
With this unit I had the chance to be creative and choose whatever pot design I wanted. My random and daydreamy mind felt like making a princess Rapunzel-tower, so that’s what I did (at least I didn’t glaze it pink). I’ve always been a fan of fairytales and Disney-princesses, so I really enjoyed crafting my pot. My favorite part of the tower is the golden roof, because I think it totally matches the magical fairytale theme, and brings out the blue tone in the base. For being my first big ceramic pot, I think it turned out nice and represents my style well.
