This unit I learned several new techniques, most notably how to use the slab roller. I found this project one of the most difficult of the year, and faced multiple problems with the construction of my pot. The front clasp of my pot broke several times and in the end I just had to use hot glue to keep it together. I decided to make a purse because I enjoy fashion and accessories, and I thought it was perfect for the guidelines of the project, which were to use slabs and cut a puzzle lid. My purse design was inspired by the famous Birkin bag, a super expensive designer handbag. Besides the fact that I really want a Birkin when I’m older, I also thought the square, structural shape of the bag would be easy to make with slabs. For additive relief I added details like buckles, handles, and clasps. For subtractive relief, I carved a crocodile pattern into the bag. I think overall the bag turned out nicely and I am proud of finishing it. I have grown as an artist this past unit by learning a new skill, slab rolling, and also because I learned how to handle accidents and mistakes. Instead of panicking or becoming defeated, I dealt with any mishaps that occurred by finding creative solutions (which in this case was gluing the broken pieces together with a hot glue gun). Best of all, I now have a mini ceramics Birkin to take home with me! Woohoo!
